Marine Conservation Bali

The Reef Conservation Program

Indonesia has restrictions in place due to the pandemic and this program cannot receive the international help it needs right now. We are taking bookings for late 2021 and provide complete flexibility with dates!

For those who love marine life and want to make a difference to the environment, this Marine Conservation program is guaranteed to placate the eco-warrior within you! Set in the picturesque traditional fishing village of Tianyar in north eastern Bali, this amazing program’s aim is to fundamentally change the unsustainable fishing practices currently employed there and establish a new model that both empowers local fishermen and protects the fragile marine environment. Far from Bali’s tourist hub and the tourist dollar, the people of Tianyar are dependent on fishing for survival, however change must be made if this economy and environment are to survive. Join Love Volunteers on this essential conservation program and do your bit to protect the environment and the local’s livelihood.

Goals of this Project:

  • Help build an artificial reef to protect this fragile marine environment
  • Provide clean beaches and reefs through clean-up projects
  • Provide marine education projects to locals and visitors
  • Expose volunteers and locals alike to different people and cultures

How You Can Help

Volunteers on this program will be working in a beautiful location on an important project that not only protects the environment but also empowers the local population, helping to establish future economic prosperity for the area. The project centers around the 3.5 km coast line of gorgeous Tianyar beach, building an artificial reef and providing paid work to local fishermen to help them support their families. Volunteers will work alongside locals building the reef, or work on clean up or education projects. Participants with scuba diving experience can work directly on the reef project. Volunteers can also choose to learn how to dive while on the project, with a free introduction dive course provided to those who volunteer for a minimum of four weeks. Full dive option details are noted in the 'Additional Info.' section. This project is a great way for international volunteers to learn more about the Balinese people and culture in a traditional fishing village far removed from Bali’s tourism mecca. It’s an ideal program for those who love the sea, have an interest in scuba diving and who want to help protect the environment for future generations.

Volunteers will contribute in a number of ways and can expect to undertake the following tasks:

  • Work on marine conservation projects directly – building reefs, clean up or education projects
  • Improve the English language skills of local fishermen and locals
  • Work to establish future programs in the area for turtle conservation and coral transplantation

Requirements

17yo+

Love Volunteers welcomes all those 18 years and over who wish to give their time and energy to help protect the natural environment of Bali. This 'hands-on' project is best suited to those who are either pursuing a career in conservation/environmental studies, or who simply wish to explore an interest in this field. However, the project is open to all and does not require participants to have specific education, qualifications or experience, as you will be shown everything you need to know by your local project leader. Importantly though, all applicants must first and foremost have a genuine willingness to help, show drive and initiative, and bring a positive 'can-do' attitude. If this sounds like you, we want you on the team!

Additionally, volunteers applying to join this program will be required to supply to following documentation:

Project Location

Bali, Tianyar Village

Our other project hub of Ubud is just 2 hours’ drive from this location.

Within walking distance of the village projects there are some wonderful things to see and do, including walking along the pristine beaches, swimming, snorkelling! This is a truly special place to be a Love Volunteer!
