Teach English Abroad

Education Support Program

Indonesia has restrictions in place due to the pandemic and this program cannot receive the international help it needs right now.

This inspiring teaching project is located in what has been described as the heart of Bali. Ubud is a serene town, famous as a self-awareness center and surrounded by rain-forest and terraced rice paddies, and dotted with Hindu temples and shrines. A mecca for those on a spiritual journey, Ubud has a thriving tourism scene. Unfortunately, while the tourism dollar keeps the town humming, there is still poverty among its people, with much help needed to teach and support its youth. As a tourism hot-spot, those seeking employment in Bali find that English is an essential skill, one that they must speak fluently and confidently. This program supports this need by providing volunteers to work with local children and help set the foundations for a better life. Located in a traditional rural village just outside Ubud, volunteers will teach students in a classroom made from locally harvested bamboo, in a tropical forest setting surrounded by banana, coco, coffee and paw paw trees. This project is a great way for international volunteers to learn more about the Balinese people and culture, teach those in need and spend time exploring this magical location.

Goals of this Project:

  • Provide free English lessons to children in amazing Ubud
  • Expose non-English speakers to native English speakers in order to improve pronunciation and conversational skills
  • Teach creatively and create a love for learning among the children
  • Expose volunteers and locals alike to different people and cultures

How You Can Help

Volunteers on this wonderful program will be setting their students up with the skills for a happier life. The ability to communicate in English has become fundamental in the lives of the Balinese, where most of the economy is now largely dependent on international tourism. Volunteers in this magical setting will co-teach with another volunteer or a local English teacher. A fully developed teaching program has been developed for volunteers to follow, designed around speaking and listening, with the development of student’s vocabulary key. Volunteers are encouraged to be fun and outgoing in their classes, and to incorporate singing, art, music, games and other activities to make the student’s learning experience as enjoyable as possible. With the knowledge and confidence to partake in conversational English with foreigners, these children will have the tools for a brighter future. It is recommended that volunteers research teaching English as a second language techniques and creative ways to do so before embarking on this epic adventure!

Volunteers will contribute in a number of ways and can expect to undertake the following tasks:

  • Teach English to students
  • Teach other basic subject matter in English
  • Play games and run activities
  • Teach students about their own lives and where they live

Love Volunteers welcomes all those 18 years and over who wish to help create a brighter future for children through the power of education. This project best suits those with experience and/or qualifications in the field of childhood development and education, though volunteers who simply wish to explore an interest in this field are also welcomed as there are many ways you can assist in the classroom. Whist not mandatory, completing a TEFL course prior to joining this project would prove to be highly beneficial. Ideally, volunteers on this project will have at least a basic knowledge of the local language in order to communicate effectively with staff and students, though this is not a pre-requisite. Importantly, all applicants must first and foremost have a genuine willingness to help, show drive and initiative, and bring a positive 'can-do' attitude. If this sounds like you, we want you on the team!

Additionally, volunteers applying to join this program will be required to supply to following documentation:

Project Location

Bali, Ubud Village

In many ways, Ubud is considered to be Bali's cultural heart. Located in the cool mountains, just one hour's drive north of the airport and the resorts of southern Bali, this traditional country town and flourishing traditional crafts centre is home of one of Bali's royal families. Around Ubud the surrounding villages like Campuhan, Penestanan, Peliatan and Batuan specialise in crafts and woodcarving which are sold to the many tourists who visit the tropical island each year. There are hundreds of shops selling antiques, woodcarvings, crafts, textiles, paintings and jewellery as well as some of the best art museums in the country, dozens of art studios, an excellent local craft market and galleries – making Ubud a truly remarkable place to be a Love Volunteer!
