Childcare Volunteering in Jamaica

Volunteer Childcare Program

Jamaica has COVID-19 precautions in place that mean this program can't get the assistance it needs right now.

Combining the gorgeous tropical island of Jamaica and the ability to help children in need must surely be the holy grail for many international volunteers? Participants on this fantastic childcare program will work in this Caribbean paradise to care for its at-risk and impoverished children. Many children in the Caribbean face various challenges, including neglect, abuse, trafficking and general lack of care. The organizations that work to address these issues need extra support staff to carry out their daily activities – and that’s where our volunteers come in. Volunteers could be working with these wonderful children in childcare facilities, homes for children with disabilities or even working alongside government agencies. These projects are severely understaffed and underfunded, which is why they are in urgent need of volunteers. For volunteers who truly want to make a difference to the lives of disadvantaged children, this program serves to protect and care for those who need it most.

Goals of this Project:

  • Provide essential childcare to the vulnerable children of Jamaica
  • Improve the future prospects of children in Jamaica
  • Give impoverished children quality care, compassion and a sense of hope
  • Enable inter-cultural exchange which benefits both locals and international volunteers alike

How You Can Help

Volunteers play an essential role in helping disadvantaged children through this program. Participants will assist with the children’s wellbeing by helping to assess their development levels with simple evaluation tools. This information is then used to develop programmes designed to improve their abilities and stimulate their sensory, cognitive and motor skills through dance, music, art and craft, games and role play. Volunteers will help with basic education and interactive activities that promote growth and development and will provide general day to day care (bathing, feeding, laundry, cleaning), ensuring that children practice proper hygiene and sanitation. Volunteers could also be involved in monthly outreach activities providing services and support to children in need. This is a wonderful program for volunteers with a compassionate nature and a willingness to assist children in need. International volunteers make a huge difference to the lives of these vulnerable children and are truly appreciated.

Volunteers will contribute in a number of ways on this program and can expect to undertake the following tasks:

  • Help to care for the children
  • Attend to and interact with the children
  • Assess the children’s developmental needs
  • Create activities and entertain the children with games and songs, etc.

Requirements

18yo+

Love Volunteers welcomes all those 18 years and over who wish to assist in the development of Jamaica's next generation. While this highly rewarding project does not require participants to have a background in the field of childcare, as there are many ways you can assist, volunteers with suitable education, qualifications or experience are highly sought after. Regardless, a volunteer’s individual role can often be tailored to suit their particular skills and interests. Ideally, volunteers on this project will have at least a basic knowledge of the local language in order to communicate effectively with staff and students, though this is not a pre-requisite. All applicants must of course display a genuine willingness to help, show drive and initiative, and bring a positive 'can-do' attitude. If this sounds like you, we want you on the team!

Additionally, volunteers applying to join this program will be required to supply to following documentation:

  • Emergency contact
  • Police check

Find out how to obtain a police check here

Project Location

Jamaica, Mandeville

As with all of our Jamaica volunteer programs, volunteers on this project will be based in the idyllic city of Mandeville. Situated in the heart of the island at 2000 feet above sea level, Mandeville is one of the more peaceful and attractive places on the entire island of Jamaica.

In days gone by, wealthy English settlers and expatriates favoured this part of the island, building impressive mansions and country homes here because the landscape reminded them of the countryside of their home countries. Today, a large number of the residents here are Jamaicans who have lived abroad for many years, usually in England, and who have returned to retire.

Thanks to this esteemed history, Mandeville is not only a booming business center and capital of the Manchester Parish, it is a contrast of the new and old set amidst rolling hills and lush vegetation. What a wonderful place to volunteer!

Accommodation & Meals

Host Family / Meals Included

Volunteers on this program will be accommodated with a local Jamaican host family, where they will have the opportunity to become fully immersed in the local culture and custom, improving their knowledge of the people, culture and language. Jamaican families are renowned for their hospitality and love to learn more about different cultures. Living with a local family truly is the best way to throw oneself into the local culture and to meet people who will often become lifelong friends!

All host families have been fully vetted by our local team, receive a detailed orientation and have extensive experience hosting international volunteers. Depending on the time of year it may be necessary to share a room with other volunteers, but private rooms are often available upon request. Volunteers will be provided access to a shared bathroom and laundry. Volunteers are responsible for doing their own laundry (machine wash or hand wash onsite) or can pay a small fee to cover the cost. Wifi is available at most host family houses, however we ask volunteers to remember access to this service is a privilege and may be limited at times. A range of internet cafes are available in Mandeville.

Host families will provide breakfast and dinner daily (including weekends). Lunch is not included but can be purchased at a nearby café while at your project site – a wonderful opportunity to check out the huge variety of local and international restaurants, cafés and bistros in Mandeville!
