Teaching and Education Volunteering

The Teaching Program

Grenada has pandemic restrictions in place that mean this program can't get the assistance it needs right now.

This crucial project was created with the goal of helping to improve the education of children and young people on the beautiful island of Grenada. International volunteers on this program have the opportunity to explore this amazing Caribbean island while also putting their love for helping children and young people to great use on this truly worthwhile project. This project works across all levels of schooling, with volunteers providing an essential teaching resource in an education system where resources remain extremely limited. Many schools in Grenada have extremely low literacy and numeracy rates among their students with teachers simply struggling to teach due to a lack of resourcing and funding. Support from volunteers is critical to improving education levels among these wonderful children.

Goals of this Project:

  • Provide quality education to children in Grenada
  • Teach and interact with marginalized children and provide support to those who need it most
  • Improve the future prospects of some of Grenada’s most impoverished children, and help them to break the poverty cycle
  • Expose volunteers and children to different people and cultures

How You Can Help

International volunteers play a critical role in establishing a solid foundation for children’s learning and supporting teachers in the classroom and through play. This program works across different schools with varying age groups; early childhood institutions (3-6 years), primary school (6-12 years), primary and junior high schools and high schools (12-18 years). Participants offer support to teachers primarily in English and mathematics however may also assist with other subjects such as art, dance, drama, history, social studies, geography, French and Spanish dependent on their interest and experience and the needs of the school. Volunteers will assist teachers with preparing lesson plans and charts, educational games, small workshops and facilitate lessons that are interactive and fun. One of the highlights for many children is when volunteers teach them about their home country and culture, opening up a whole new world to them. For volunteers who want to share their love of learning with children in need of educational support, become a Love Volunteer and book your trip to Grenada today!

Volunteers will contribute in a number of ways and can expect to undertake the following tasks:

  • Teaching English and mathematics to children attending the school
  • Assisting teachers and volunteers in classes
  • Teaching subjects the volunteer has an interest in (i.e. sport, music, art)
  • Creating games for the students and spending time playing with students

18yo+

Love Volunteers welcomes all those 18 years and over who wish to help create a brighter future for children through the power of education. This project best suits those with experience and/or qualifications in the field of childhood development and education, though volunteers who simply wish to explore an interest in this field are also welcomed as there are many ways you can assist in the classroom. Whist not mandatory, completing a TEFL course prior to joining this project would prove to be highly beneficial. Ideally, volunteers on this project will have at least a basic knowledge of the local language in order to communicate effectively with staff and students, though this is not a pre-requisite. Importantly, all applicants must first and foremost have a genuine willingness to help, show drive and initiative, and bring a positive 'can-do' attitude. If this sounds like you, we want you on the team!

Additionally, volunteers applying to join this program will be required to supply to following documentation:

  • Emergency contact
  • Police check

Project Location

Grenada, St Georges

As with all of our Grenada volunteer programs, volunteers on this project will be based in the idyllic city St Georges – Grenada’s historic capital. The town is surrounded by a hillside created from an old volcano crater which has eroded to become what is now a protected and picturesque horseshoe-shaped harbor.

In the town center, the 18th-century Fort George offers panoramic views of the island and St. George’s Bay. Nearby, Fort Matthew was formerly a battleground and, later, an asylum, and hides beneath is a twisted maze of underground tunnels. The Grenada National Museum hosts exhibits about the history of the region, including the plantation economy and the whaling industry.

St. George's is a popular Caribbean tourist destination and the town has developed in recent years, while preserving its history, culture, and natural environment. This is a truly unique place to volunteer!

Accommodation & Meals

Host Family / Meals Included

Volunteers on this program will be accommodated with a local Grenadan host family, where they will have the opportunity to become fully immersed in the local culture and custom, improving their knowledge of the people, culture and language. Grenadan families are renowned for their hospitality and love to learn more about different cultures. Living with a local family truly is the best way to throw oneself into the local culture and to meet people who will often become lifelong friends!

All host families have been fully vetted by our local team, receive a detailed orientation and have extensive experience hosting international volunteers. Depending on the time of year it may be necessary to share a room with other volunteers, but private rooms are often available upon request. Volunteers will be provided access to a shared bathroom and laundry. Volunteers are responsible for doing their own laundry (machine wash or hand wash onsite) or can pay a small fee to cover the cost. Wifi is available at most host family houses, however we ask volunteers to remember access to this service is a privilege and may be limited at times. A range of internet cafes are available in St Georges.

Host families will provide breakfast and dinner daily (including weekends). Lunch is not included but can be purchased at a nearby café while at your project site – a wonderful opportunity to check out the huge variety of local and international restaurants, cafés and bistros in St Georges!
