I chose to volunteer in Palestine for two weeks in May 2012, and was surprised for numerous reasons. Firstly, do not be deterred by what you have read or watched about this country - Palestine is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, with its stunning valleys, hills and genuinely friendly people making it a very special place to live and volunteer. Moreover, to volunteer here is to gain a rare and incredible opportunity to witness the reality behind a situation long prevalent in headlines around the world, and living amongst Palestinians, whether it be for two weeks or two months, will give you a balanced, accurate and much needed human perspective of what is occurring in the country. The volunteering itself is thoroughly enjoyable; you'll be working with an brilliant local NGO that works directly with the community. Be flexible, and make the most of every opportunity you are given. I couldn't recommend this experience highly enough - be prepared to be surprised, amazed, and have an adventure which you will treasure forever.
