Wildlife Conservation

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

About The Project

This wonderful program places volunteers on essential projects that are working directly to save Zimbabwe’s endangered wildlife. There are many projects on offer, with volunteers able to choose which volunteer project they wish to participate in and where their skills can be of most benefit and do the most good towards this amazing cause. One such project the Wildlife Photography initiative, a fantastic way to preserve and conserve the country’s fast depleting species due to poaching and hunting. This project trains communities who are involved in the wildlife hunting trade and ‘tourism’ market, to instead ‘shoot’ wildlife in a more sustainable and humane way. The project trains these communities instead on wildlife photography, teaching them the importance of preserving the wildlife, from an ecological perspective, but also as a sustainable commercial activity that will provide an ongoing tourism market for years to come. The photos are sold for profit, and also raise awareness of the plight of the country’s wildlife. There are also hands-on wildlife conservation projects on offer.  Regardless of which project volunteers choose to participate on, they all work towards the common goal of saving and preserving wildlife.

Goals of this Project:

  • Preserve Zimbabwe’s spectacular wildlife for future generations
  • To promote volunteerism as a tool sustainable community development
  • To  offer  affordable  and  exciting  volunteer  projects  in  one  of  the  magnificent  world heritage sites, Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
  • To  create  a  better  understanding  of  the  African  culture  and  value  system

How You Can Help

Volunteers play an integral role in achieving this program’s wonderful goal of protecting and preserving the wildlife of Zimbabwe. The program’s top priority is the welfare of its volunteers and that of the wildlife it is working to protect. All wildlife programs respect the wildlife’s rights in their natural habitat, are free from cruelty and serve only to save and preserve them, while also working to raise awareness of their plight. Volunteers may work on a hands-on project saving wildlife caught in snares with the programs trained professionals, work in a wildlife shelter caring for sick, injured or orphaned animals until they are strong enough to be released back into their natural habitat, or on an economic development program and awareness raising initiative such as the wildlife photography project, which aims to improve the long term prospects of the local community and its wildlife.

Volunteers contribute in a number of ways and can expect to undertake some of the following tasks:

  • Work hands-on with wildlife in their natural environment or in shelters
  • Work on economic development opportunities with the local community to discourage hunting/poaching
  • Raise awareness of the wildlife’s plight

Love Volunteers welcomes all those 18 years and over who wish to give their time and energy to help protect and conserve the native wildlife of Zimbabwe. This project is best suited to those who are either pursuing a career in animal conservation/zoological studies, or who simply wish to explore an interest in this field. However, the project is open to all and does not require participants to have specific education, qualifications or experience, as you will be shown everything you need to know by one of local project leaders. Importantly though, all applicants must first and foremost have a genuine willingness to help, show drive and initiative, and bring a positive 'can-do' attitude. If this sounds like you, we want you on the team!

Additionally, volunteers applying to join this program will be required to supply to following documentation:

Project Location

Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is a town in the western portion of Zimbabwe, across the border from Livingstone, Zambia, and near Botswana. The town lies immediately next to the falls which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world. Although the falls are the major attraction, this popular tourist destination offers both adventure seekers and sightseers plenty of opportunities for a longer stay. While in Victoria Falls you will have the opportunity to undertake many leisure activities ranging from white water rafting and bungee jumping to canoeing, fishing and boat cruises. Your program coordinator can assist you if you wish to book one of these activities and they often get a better price for volunteers.

Accommodation & Meals

Host Family / Meals Included

Volunteers joining our team in Victoria Falls are accommodated with one of our carefully selected local host families - which are perfectly located in the safe and convenient suburbs of Chinotimba and Mkhosana in the heart of the Victoria Falls township, within convenient access to local restaurants, cafes and shops and of course the UNESCO world heritage site of the majestic Victoria Falls! In most case they provide the volunteer with a private room, but during busy periods you many need to share with other volunteers. The families are experienced in hosting international volunteers and will take very good care of you.

Staying with a local Zimbabwean family is a great way to be truly immersed in the local culture. All families have been fully vetted by our local team and have plenty of experience in hosting international volunteers. Plus, transport to and from the project site is provided daily (included in program fee).

On working days, volunteers are provided two meals (breakfast and dinner) on a daily basis while at their home stay house, while lunch will be provided at the partner office on weekdays. Lunch will be taken at home on the weekend. If you’re working over your lunch break you can take a packed lunch with you.

For those social occasions with your fellow volunteers, Victoria Falls has a sprinkling of top class restaurants, several African buffets and a few coffee shops, sandwich shops, and fast food options. Easy!
