Creative Arts

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

About The Project

Brazil has suffered from the pandemic and we are unable to place international volunteers on our programs in Rio right now.  Sign up now for 2022 and we'll work with you every step of the way and provide complete flexibility with dates!

The vibrant creative arts program in the heart of Rio de Janiero’s Rocinha favela was created with the goal of teaching a creative outlet to youth most in need. Having the opportunity to learn art techniques and immerse themselves in creative activity is a luxury many youths in the favela simply would never have had the opportunity to enjoy. Teaching art to these students is invaluable, providing a creative avenue and connecting youth to a vital cultural movement. The program is widely viewed as a vehicle which keeps youth engaged when not in school and involving them in positive activities where they have the ability to practice freedom of expression.

Goals of this Project:

  • Provide free art classes to the youth of Rocinha favela.
  • Participate in community art projects to create more vibrant community spaces in an impoverished city
  • Expose youth to the creative arts, which due to poverty many would not have experienced or been able to participate in
  • Enable inter-cultural exchange which benefits both youth and international volunteers alike

How You Can Help

Art allows students to express themselves, tapping into their inventiveness and creativity, and is a fun outlet that helps positively stimulate and motivate. By teaching youth creative skills and allowing them the freedom to express themselves, volunteers are imparting these youth with the skills to help them towards a happier, more fulfilling life.

Volunteers will be working in the heart of the favela, teaching classes in schools or out in the community. Projects include participating in any number of diverse community restoration projects, such as helping paint murals and houses in the favela, creating a more colourful and vibrant community space for residents to live their lives.

Volunteers can expect to;

  • Participate in a diverse range of community projects
  • Teach art classes, giving youth the opportunity to experience creativity and learn art techniques
  • Design activities and prepare lesson plans
  • Monitor students’ progress and write debriefs
  • Network with local artists and volunteer program staff
  • By joining this project, volunteers also contribute toward material costs (included in progam fees)

Requirements

18yo+

Love Volunteers welcomes all those 18 years and over who wish to assist in the artistic development of Brazil's next generation. While this highly rewarding project does not require participants to have a background in the fields of art or education, as there are many ways you can assist, volunteers with suitable education, qualifications or experience are highly sought after. Regardless, a volunteer’s individual role can often be tailored to suit their particular skills and interests. Volunteers on this project will need an understanding of Portuguese (or Spanish) in order to communicate effectively with the children and local staff members. All applicants must of course display a genuine willingness to help, show drive and initiative, and bring a positive 'can-do' attitude. If this sounds like you, we want you on the team!

Additionally, volunteers applying to join this program will be required to supply to following documentation:

  • Emergency contact
  • Police check

Project Location

Brazil, Rio de Janeiro

This program is located in the favela (shanty town) community of Rocinha- in the southern part of this sprawling city. Rio is Brazil’s second most populous city after Sao Paulo and is symbolized by the iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer which stands atop Sugarloaf Mountain and watches over all of Rio. World renowned for its eponymous carnival, Copacabana and Ipanema beaches and of course the 2016 Olympics, Rio has something to offer every traveler. This is an amazing location for volunteers to not only give back to the local communities but to have a truly memorable experience!
